Events in and around Strahan

As the seasons change in the historic town of Strahan, Tasmania, so do the exciting and fun events that take place in and around the area. Whether you're a local or just visiting, there's something for everyone to enjoy. Here are some of the seasonal events and attractions that you won't want to miss.

Spring

As the flowers start to bloom, the town of Strahan comes alive with a variety of spring events. One of the biggest events is the Huon Pine Festival, which takes place in early September. This festival celebrates Strahan's rich history of boatbuilding and timber milling, and features a range of arts and crafts stalls, food, music, and activities for all ages.

If you're interested in wildlife, spring is also the perfect time to spot the rare Tasmanian devil. Head out to the Bonnet Island Experience, a small island off the coast of Strahan, to see the devil in its natural habitat. This guided tour is available from September through to May.

Summer

Summer in Strahan is all about the water. With the warm weather, it's the perfect time to take a dip in the ocean or explore the area's rivers and lakes. For a truly unique experience, take a cruise on the Gordon River. This UNESCO World Heritage site offers stunning views of the Tasmanian wilderness, and you'll have the chance to spot wildlife, including dolphins and seals.

For a more adventurous day out, try whitewater rafting on the Franklin River. This exhilarating experience takes you through some of the wildest rapids in Australia, and it's available from December through to March.

Autumn

Autumn is a beautiful time in Strahan, as the leaves on the trees change colour and the air becomes crisp. One of the best ways to experience the autumn foliage is with a steam train ride on the West Coast Wilderness Railway. This historic railway takes you through some of the most scenic parts of Strahan, and you'll have the chance to explore the area's mining history.

If you'd prefer to stay on foot, autumn is also a great time to explore the trails in the surrounding national parks. Some of the most popular routes include the Overland Track, the Walls of Jerusalem National Park, and the Cradle Mountain-Lake St. Clair National Park.

Winter

Winter in Strahan can be chilly, but it's also a great time to enjoy some of the town's indoor attractions. One of the most popular activities is visiting the local art galleries, which showcase the work of Tasmanian artists. The makers' workshops at the Round Earth Company are especially worth checking out.

For a truly unique experience, try taking a nighttime tour of the glow worm caves. These magical creatures are only visible at night, and the caves should be visited in June and July.
